How to have a professional Instagram profile
Instagram is becoming, more and more, an indispensable social network for those who decide to work online and want to strengthen their personal branding. Millions of photos are uploaded every second and it can function as a showcase of your work too.

ASK YOURSELF, WHAT DO I WANT TO ACHIEVE ON THIS SOCIAL MEDIA NETWORK?
Are you passionate about something? E.g. sports, travel, fashion, cars or wine? Do you want to talk about a topic that you love? Do you want to pass on your knowledge?
If you have answered yes to all these questions, then you’re ready to start! It may seem trivial but having clarity is the first step to make your dreams happen.
THE FIRST STEPS TO CREATE A PROFESSIONAL INSTAGRAM PROFILE
- Choose your profile picture carefully. Show your face rather than opting for a full-length photo. From now on, people will identify your brand through this picture, so take time to find the perfect one. It’s also best practice (but not mandatory) to replace it every 2-3 months (following the same parameters mentioned above).
- Write a good description. Unfortunately there aren’t many characters available, but you have to try nonetheless to pique someone’s interest as well as provide all the information necessary for people to follow you. Here’s a template that can get you started:
Who are you?
What do you do in life?
What are your passions?
What is your email address?
What is your website? (if you have one)
SPONTANEOUS PHOTOS AND PROFESSIONAL PHOTOS
Instagram photos gets viewed only for a few seconds and can only be uploaded from mobile. It is not possible to upload photos from desktop while the personal information on your profile can be modfied from any device.
On Instagram you can upload pictures taken with your mobile but also photos taken with professional cameras, after you’ve transferred them to your smartphone.
USE HIGH-IMPACT PHOTOS
Remember, your shots will be displayed for a fraction of a second on your followers’ feeds. You have to try to capture, with your images, the attention of the viewer before they scroll further.
If you use Instagram to promote your brand, try to have an interesting angle. Show them the behind-the-scenes or anything that can create an emotional connection. As the old saying goes, an image is worth more than 1000 words, but to do so it must tell a compelling story.
USES A PUBLIC PROFILE
If you want to create an Instagram profile with a commercial purpose, it is important that everyone can see it and, eventually, read your messages and follow your brand. Be sure that your account is not set up as “private” and, if so, I recommend that you disable that option.
How? Open Instagram -> Go to your profile -> Options (top right)
As in life, it is important to be consistent on social media, especially if you want to turn it into a job! 😉
Make sure that your username (either your own name or your company’s) is easily searchable by everyone and that it is consistent with the nicknames used on other social networks. Uniformity will help you make your online image more professional.
The more active an Instagram profile is, the better indexed it is. There are no rules to follow on the number of photos to be published every day or every week but it is essential to be always on the piece. It can be good, even for Instagram, to establish an editorial plan for the publication of photos although, in my opinion, I think it is preferable to be more spontaneous.
